the latest on the last-minute wheeling and dealing being done in washington. good morning, lisa. >> reporter: good morning, bianna. well, the next 24 hours are critical. the president this morning in his radio address, told lawmakers don't let washington politics get in the way of american progress. so, the last-ditch attempt is on the way to put together a deal. and the ball is in the senate's court. there's nothing like a deadline to force action. the president met with congressional leaders friday for the first time in six weeks. then, proclaimed himself modestly optimistic. but warned -- >> the american people are watching what we do here. obviously, their patience is already thin. >> reporter: with the clock running out, here's the game plan. the democratic and republican leaders in the senate will spend day trying to hash out a bipartisan agreement. >> i'm hopeful and optimistic. >> reporter: but if there is no deal, the president wants an up or down vote on measures he thinks can pass. extending tax cuts for those making $250,000 or less. and continuing unemployment benefits for the m

politics closely, it looks like the usual gamesmanship out of washington. in your gut, do you think that this is basically theater and they'll come to a deal quickly? >> i think it's -- i think the odds are about 50/50 right now. which is very high for a negative outcome this far along. there is a very good chance they go over the cliff at least for a few days at the beginning of the year. then, that galvanizes everything and they're finally able to come to a deal. >> bottom line they are playing with fire and we could all get burned. >> no question about it. >> especially when you see the economy just recovering. >> that's the thing. the question would be, how much harm will this do to the economy? if you have all of these spending cuts on every government program, on top of everyone's taxes going up, i should say, once you see that prospect of everyone's taxes going up, i do think that no matter what, by mid-january at the latest, you will see that tax cut reinstated for most americans. for the bottom 98%. good, good chances the taxes are going up on the wealthy. >> psychologicall

, congress left the capital with no deal in sight. jon karl is in washington. they needed to get it done before new year's to see this thing get done. has the time to have that happen already passed? >> well, it's getting -- there's not much hope out there. i gotta tell you. just over a week left, josh. and the speaker of the house and the president did not even speak over the weekend. the last time they had a conversation was a brief phone conversation on friday. no signs of progress on anything since then. there wasn't much before, as you know. now the white house is looking at a fallback plan. just a stop-gap bill they're hoping congress would do that would delay the tax increases on people making over $250,000 from going into effect. it would extend unemployment benefits and delay spending cuts going into effect on january 1st. even accomplishing that will be difficult. congress comes back two days after christmas. that gives them four dice come to an agreement and pass something. not an easy task. >> so we know what it means for the average men. what happens in washington if we go o

'tis the season to be surly. the president told bloomberg television that without tax rates going up on the wealthiest americans, there will be no deal to avert going over the fiscal cliff. >> we're going to have to see the rates on the top 2% go up. and we're not going to be able to get a deal without it. >> reporter: house republicans are adamant, no tax rate increases. >> we're willing to put revenues on the table. revenues that come from closing loopholes, getting rid of special interest deductions and not raising rates. >> reporter: but what the republicans are offering sounds a lot like what the president wanted during last year's budget showdown. >> give us $1.2 trillion in additional revenues, which could be accomplished without hiking tax rates by eliminating loopholes, eliminating some deductions. >> reporter: today, however, the president says those moves will not be enough. and the latest pew poll shows a lot of public pessimism. with 49% of the public sayin

avila has been tracking the latest in washington. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, amy. the loss of this homegrown superstar, beloved on both sides of the border, is under investigation by u.s. and mexican officials. under scrutiny, the maintenance of the plane and the medical record of a pilot in his late 70s. mexican-american superstar jenni rivera may be lost. her twin-engine lear jet, spread over a 1,000-foot debris field. but overnight, her family refused to give up on a miracle. >> we have no confirmation of her body being recovered. we are strong. and we'll continue to stay strong. >> reporter: still, the news from investigators is not encouraging. reports of a rapid lost of altitu altitude, just outside monterrey, mexico, where the mexican-american superstar had performed the night before the crash. now, we're learning that the small twin-engine lear jet was old. it was a 43-year-old jet. and one of the two pilots was 78. both of those factors will be investigated by mexican authorities, aided by the american national transportation safety board. >> there's no age limit f
